Frequently Asked Questions

What local areas does your service cover?

Our GTG Driving School instructors provide lessons to students in Croydon area. We currently cover areas with postcodes CR0, CR2, CR7. Please see our “locations page”. We will come and pick you up at your house once your lessons are booked.

Are you qualified?

Yes, all driving instructors who accept payment for tuition, by law, have to be registered with the Driving Standard Agency. (DSA), but there are fully qualified instructors, who display a green badge.
It is in your interest to make sure your instructor is fully qualified.

What do I need before starting driving lessons?

Currently in the UK you can apply for your provisional licence just before you are 17 years of age.
You must be in possession of a provisional driving licence before you will be able to drive on a public road. You must also be able to read a car registration number plate, with or without glasses or contact lenses. The distance requirement for the eyesight test using old style number plates is 20.5 metres or 20 metres if the new-style number plate is used. New-style number plates are easily identifiable starting with two letters eg AB 51 ABC.

When can I have my driving lessons?

We work to suit your needs so book early to get the time you want.

Do you charge for cancelled lessons?

Yes, Time is a commodity and can’t be replaced. We would charge for lessons cancelled with less than 48hrs notice.

How many lessons will I require to pass my driving test?

This is a question that all most pupils ask. It will be not right to us to give you a false hope and tell you in advance how many lessons you need without even assessing you.
Each person is an individual, some people will learn quicker than others. Some will pick up certain aspects quickly, but struggle with others. Learning to drive is not an exact science, but an ongoing learning process. The DSA recommend a minimum of 40hrs tuition with a driving instructor and the same again with their parents/family.

Can I start driving lessons with a GTG driving instructor before I pass my theory test?

We recommend that you take practical lessons while preparing for your theory test. The combination of both practical experience with theoretical learning will help you perform better at your theory test.

Can you help me: I’m just looking for cheap driving lessons?

It always surprising to hear how many people ring up and ask: how cheap are you ? The right question should be: how good are you? Please remember that learning to drive properly and safely should be your number one priority. Learning correctly will save your life one day…but learning to drive on cheap lessons unfortunately could bring you many issues.

Are all your training cars dual controlled?

At GTG we only use training cars that are all fitted with dual controls for your safety along with air conditioning and power-assisted steering for ease of driving. Remember, your safety is our number one priority.

What If I want to learn in an automatic?

If you take and pass your test in an Automatic car, you can only drive an Automatic once qualified. (If you pass in a manual car you can drive either type of vehicle)
